FAQ

Can I soak cast iron cookware?

No! Under no circumstances. Prolonged contact of cast iron cookware with water will lead to rusting. If the food particles are burnt and strongly adhered to the surface, it is better to pour water into the cookware and boil for 3-5 minutes, cool and scrub with a brush or scouring pad. This will be enough to completely clean your cast iron cookware.

Can I use ordinary dishwashing detergent to clean my cast iron cookware?

Yes, you can. A small amount of mild detergent will not harm your cast iron cookware at all. A higher concentration of soap will cause the protective layer to be washed away excessively. But you can always restore it.

Can I use a metal scourer to clean cast iron cookware?

You can use a conventional scourer, such as a nylon or steel scraper, to clean cast iron cookware from heavy cooking soiling. To remove rust, you can use a special metal brush or scraper to clean the coating before the restoration procedure.

Can I wash my cast iron cookware in the dishwasher?

Do not put your cast iron cookware in the dishwasher. Dishwasher detergents are too aggressive for the natural finish of cast iron cookware and will destroy the protective layer.

How to store cast iron cookware?

Store your cast iron cookware in a dry place to prevent rust.

Why does cast iron cookware have a rough surface?

Cast iron is a porous material by its structure. It is an iron alloy to which large amounts of carbon have been added during the cooling process. Due to the concentration of carbon above the solubility limit, the resulting alloy is characterised by high hardness but low homogeneity. In the production of cast iron cookware, the surface is even further processed to increase its roughness. This, in turn, increases the adhesion area of the cast iron to the coating and makes it stronger. As you use your cookware, the surface of the cookware will gradually smooth out as the natural protective coating thickens.

Can the coating of cast iron cookware peel off? What should I do if this happens?

Sometimes the protective coating of cast iron cookware can peel off. This is normal. This happens when a layer of oil has not fused to the cast iron surface and has come off. All you need to do is rinse with warm water, dry well and coat with a thin layer of oil, and to create a more durable coating, bake it in the oven for an additional time as described in our step-by-step instructions.

What foods can damage the coating of cast iron cookware?

Foods that are too acidic, such as tomatoes, lemon juice or berries, can damage the natural protective coating of cast iron cookware if they are cooked for a long time. For this reason, we recommend that you avoid cooking foods that are too acidic or liquid when you first start using Brizoll cast iron cookware until the protective coating has built up.

Why do black spots and stains remain on the towel after cleaning the cast iron cookware?

Black streaks and spots are natural carbon deposits that have come off the surface of your cast iron cookware. This can happen when you come into contact with acidic foods or when cooking at too high a temperature. There is nothing to worry about. Once the cookware has dried well, simply brush it with oil and use it as usual.
